I paint the native East Coast birds that have always been part of my life. I observe them daily- from my studio window, along the trails I walk, and in my own yard. I’m drawn to how they move, how they interact, and how sunlight transforms their colors.
My work is based on close observation. I focus on structure, texture, and detail, aiming for scientific accuracy while capturing each bird’s individual character. By painting birds up close, I hope to spark connection and curiosity for species that are often seen but easily overlooked.
I work primarily in acrylic on wood panels, live-edge wood slices, and vellum paper. Each piece is built through layered underpainting and detailed brushwork.
I earned a Fine Arts degree from Oakland University, taught at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and later worked in an award-winning commercial art studio before founding The Roving Hare. I now live and work in the Mid-Atlantic region, exploring and painting the birds I encounter with my family.
