Sandhill Cranes are one of the few species that mate for life. They participate in a dramatic swooping dance each spring before nesting and raising their young. This elaborate courting ritual has made them a symbol of family, love, and new beginnings. They have also been depicted in art as sacred guardians, standing watch over graves and holy sites, and are believed to be an omen of protection.
